Eastgate staff recently traveled to Syracuse to learn how communities address food access and walkability around the county. Eastgate is part of Youngstown’s Invest Health Team, an initiative that brings together diverse leaders from mid-sized U.S. cities across the nation to develop new strategies for increasing and leveraging private and public investments to accelerate improvements in neighborhoods facing the biggest barriers to better health. The program is a collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Reinvestment Fund. While in Syracuse, Eastgate staff learned about how health departments, planning agencies, engineers, and funders have improved walkability around Syracuse. Staff also toured co-ops, grocery stores, farmers markets, and community gardens to see the successes and challenges in creating health-focused food access models.
