On Tuesday October 28th, demolition began on the Leavittsburg Dam on the Mahoning River! The process began with the construction crew "notching" the dam. Notching is a process of removing layers of dam structures to create small spillways, or notches, so water is slowly released from behind a dam, rather than all at once.
This method is implemented so that the removal of the dam is gentler on the local ecosystem as opposed to a rapid release, which could be damaging to the riverbed and local ecosystems.
Leavittsburg is the latest Mahoning River dam to be demolished as part of the Mahoning River restoration project! We look forward to the continuation of this project and the reconnecting of the river communities along the Mahoning to this natural resource!
