Eastgate Unveils Mahoning River Video for Mayors Association

Jul 23, 2021

At a meeting of the Mahoning River Corridor Mayors Association Friday, Eastgate and ms consultants gave updates on the Mahoning River Corridor Revitalization. The Association consists of the mayors of Youngstown, Warren, Struthers, Lowellville, Newton Falls, Girard, Campbell, McDonald, and Niles.

Shannon Fergus, Mahoning River Corridor Revitalization Project Manager at ms consultants, presented a video conceptualizing the ways in which a revitalized riverfront could create economic and social opportunities for the communities through which it flows.

“It’s a vision of what could be,” says Joann Esenwein, Director of Planning for Eastgate. The video shows mock-ups of what attractions could bring more people to the riverfront, such as expanded parks and trails.

Fergus explained in detail the opportunities for tourism along the river, as seen along other Ohio rivers such as the Cuyahoga. She presented several possible concepts for attractions including kayak launches, trails, riverside camping, and an adventure park.

“We’re a few steps behind, but we’re going to get there,” Fergus says. Fergus presented wide, regional plans for the river's revitalization before giving more detailed concepts for each community along the Mahoning.

Currently, nine dams along the Mahoning River are planned to be demolished as a part of the long-term plans for the river’s revitalization. The demolition of the Struthers Dam is planned to begin Monday July 26, with the demolition of five more dams already funded.
